Will a humidifier help with dog allergies?

Around 15% of the world’s population has dog allergies. Unfortunately, dog allergies can be very hard to deal with. As much as you want to  love and hug on your dog, you know that any close contact with your dog will likely result in undesirable dog allergy symptoms. Some of the most common dog allergies include: stuffy nose, dry throat, watery eyes, itchiness, skin inflammation, and sneezing. While there is medicine you can take for dog allergies, many dog owners with allergies look for alternative ways to deal with the issue. Today we are going to discuss a unique way of helping with dog allergies: a humidifier.

Will a humidifier help with dog allergies?

Yes, a humidifier can certainly help you with dog allergies. When your body has an adverse reaction to dog allergens (most likely from your dog’s fur) it causes your body to overproduce mucus in an attempt to block the allergens from entering the body. This is why people with dog allergies typically have a stuffy nose. A humidifier is a perfect way to fix this problem because the humidifier adds moisture to the air. When you thus inhale the air with high moisture, it enters through your nose and into the nasal cavity. Once in the naval cavity, the moisture helps break apart hardened mucus and prevents it from clogging the nose. Once the moisture makes the mucus more soft and thinner, its is much easier for it to drain out your nose and clear up your breathing. Using a humidifier is a great way to help with your dog allergies, especially if you are having trouble sleeping at night. A humidifier also helps prevent a sore throat, because it decreases the amount of mucus that drains down your throat and irritates it.

One very important thing to remember when using a humidifier is to never use tap water. Tap water contains chlorine which can have serious health complications if you use it in a humidifier. We suggest only using distilled water in your humidifier to treat dog allergies.

Other ways to help with dog allergies:

If you or someone in your house has dog allergies, it is important to always keep your dog well groomed. This will prevent him/her from leaving behind its fur around the house and help reduce your allergic reaction. Additionally, you should not allow your dog to sit/lay on places where you often sit. For example, it is always best to prohibit your dog from laying on couches and other places that you frequent. This will reduce the contact points of you inhaling the dog’s fur.
