Why do Dogs Sleep with Their Bum Facing You

Dogs are the most adorable and beautiful animals created by nature. These four-legged fluff balls have proven themselves of great importance to humans by providing us with unquestioned loyalty, undivided devotion, and unparalleled companionship.

The bond between a human and his dog is truly heavenly and precious. Just like how we humans tend to show our affection with our canine buddies by petting them or giving treats, dogs also have their unique ways of showing their love toward us. Facing their bum towards their human owner while sleeping is one of those cute ways. In this article, we will tell you all about what this specific behavior means.

Why do Dogs Sleep with Their Bum Facing You?

The three main reasons why a dog sleeps with their bum facing you are trust/affection, petting position, and to pass their scent.

Trust and Affection

Trust and affection are words around which the whole world revolves. It makes your life a lot more beautiful when you know that someone trusts you completely and loves you unconditionally. However, the process of earning that trust and affection may require some time, especially if we are talking about dogs.

But still, it doesn’t mean that you will have to wait months to finally earn your dog’s trust. Dogs being social animals and total sweethearts, tend to trust people that are good towards them very easily. Just keep giving them their favorite treats, and you both will be best buddies in no time.

Once your dog starts trusting you, he will let you know in his unique way. For example, he might start sleeping with his butt facing towards you. At first, it might seem odd, but it makes sense once you think about it. This is also why dogs follow you from room to room.

Dogs are highly protective and cautious animals, and therefore they are always at high alert for any potential threat. But the fact that your dog sleeps with his face away from you proves that your dog trusts you completely. This means the he/she doesn’t consider you as a threat, and therefore, he is comfortable with sleeping in front of while keeping his defenses down.

The mouth of any dog is his biggest weapon, so facing it away from you is a good sign. Additionally, an animal is at his most vulnerable state when he is asleep, and if your dog trusts you while he is sleeping, it surely means that he trusts you with his life.

Sleeping like that can also be your dog’s way of saying, “I got your back Bud” as social animals often show this behavior. In this scenario, your dog is facing the opposite side as you, and therefore in his mind, you are responsible for scouting for any threats that might come from your side, and he is responsible for any danger that might come from his side.

Petting Position

Sometimes, a dog will sleep with their butt facing you simply because they prefer a certain spot to be petted. It might be their back, head, or wherever you decide to give your dog a rub. Your dog might be so comfortable in the position, that he/she will fall asleep.

Passing Scent

While dogs usually don’t pass their scent as much as cats, it is still a common behavior. Therefore, your dog might start sleeping with their bum facing you in order to pass their scent on to you.
