Dogs are instinctively curious creatures. Sometimes, this can backfire when your dog’s curiosity causes him/her to swallow a dangerous item. This can be anything from human medication, toys, or toxic food like chocolate or grapes. These toxic items can be very dangerous to your dog’s health, and you may have to induce vomiting to help save your dog.
What to do if your dog swallows something toxic
We first recommend calling a vet and explain to them what your dog ate. They will probably ask questions about your dogs weight and health, along with whether he/she is showing any symptoms. If the vet is closed, or too far way, you may be forced to induce vomiting in your dog at home.
How to make your dog vomit without hydrogen peroxide
There are four ways to induce vomiting in dogs without hydrogen peroxide. You can either use baking soda, mustard, charcoal, or a small amount of salt.
- The first is by mixing a teaspoon of baking soda into a ½ cup of water.
- You can mix a teaspoon of mustard into a cup of water.
- Another way to help your dog throw up in a pinch is to use a small amount of charcoal. You can try feeding it to him/her directly, or mix a little in with their food. Make sure you only use charcoal that is from natural wood, and not from plastic or plywood.
- The last method of inducing vomiting in a dog without hydrogen peroxide is by placing a teaspoon of salt on to the back side of your dog’s tongue. However, we do not recommend this method because salt can be toxic to your dog and make it sick. You should only use this method if it is an absolute emergency and you have no other way to make your dog throw up.
For all 4 of these methods, you should consult your vet before administering anything to your dog.
The most common reason you have to make a dog throw up is to help a dog pass cat litter.
Ways to help your dog throw up?
There are a couple great techniques you can use to help induce your dog to vomit. First, I would recommend giving them a small amount of canned food or a slide of bread. Second, try to walk them around to get some exercise. This can help your dog’s stomach become activated. Lastly, try one of the methods I listed above.
How to make a dog throw up with hands?
You can also try to make a dog throw up with your hands. To do this, carefully insert your fingers into the back of your dog’s throat. While dog’s don’t have an uvala like humans, you should try to gently touch the very back of their tongue. You must be very careful that your dog doesn’t bite down on your hand. It might be best to have another person hold their mouth open while you do this. I also recommend doing this while your dog is laying down.
How to induce vomiting in dogs with hydrogen peroxide
As crazy as it sounds, one of the most common ways to make a dog throw up is with hydrogen peroxide. To make your dog throw up with hydrogen peroxide, you should give your dog a dose of 1 teaspoon per 5 pounds of your dog’s body weight. You should only use 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide. If your dog doesn’t throw up after 5 minutes, you can give him one more dose. However, you should never give your dog more than two doses of hydrogen peroxide. Make sure you don’t use any hydrogen peroxide that is stronger than 3%.
What to do when your dog starts vomiting
You should watch your dog carefully to see if you dog vomits up the toxic item. You should know that your dog’s vomiting can last up to one hour, so you should stay with him/her for at least that long. If your dog never throws up the toxic item, we recommend taking him/her to a vet as soon as possible.
What to feed your dog after they throw up?
After your dog vomits, you should feed him/her something that is bland. You want to make sure it is something that they can easily digest. I would recommend feeding them either white rice or chicken. If you decide to give them chicken, make sure it doesn’t have any bones in it.
