How to Train a Corgi Puppy

how to train a corgi puppy

Corgis are one of our all time favorite breeds. While only reaching a small adult size of around 20-30 lbs, Corgis make up for their small size with their big heart and constant energy. Corgis are the perfect family dog, as they can easily be trained and are very affectionate dogs. Today, we are going to discuss some of the best techniques to train a corgi puppy.

How to train a Corgi puppy

Here are the key steps to train a Corgi Puppy

Establish yourself as a leader

When training a corgi puppy, it is essential that you establish yourself as the leader. Since dogs are naturally animals that live in packs, they are used to following and listening to a leader. If you do not establish yourself as the leader, then the dog will most likely not listen to you and will do things on their own. Corgi dogs want a leader that they respect. This means that you need to be a perfect combination of calm and assertive. To best achieve this, we recommend focusing on positive reinforcement when training a Corgi puppy.

Clicker training

Clicker training is a great way to train a Corgi puppy by positive reinforcement. If you don’t have a clicker, then you can just use buzzwords such a “Good boy!” When using a clicker, you want to give a click whenever your dog does something good. Immediately after clicking, you should give your puppy a treat. Eventually, your Corgi puppy will associate the clicker with a treat, and in return good behavior.

How to train a Corgi puppy to get down

We recommend using a treat and clicker to train a Corgi puppy to sit. You should start by putting a treat in your hand and hold it on the floor while saying “Down.” Once your puppies gets down on the floor, press the clicker and give them the treat. After doing this multiple times, your Corgi will realize that getting down when you say the word “down” is a positive behavior.

How to train a Corgi puppy to fetch

Fetch can be a hard game to teach a Corgi puppy because they have a very short attention span. When just starting to play fetch, a corgi puppy will probably just pick up the item and take it somewhere else, or just stay there and chew it. The key here is to start by throwing the item close by (about a foot or two), and once your puppy puts it in their mouth, call them to you. Once your Corgi puppy brings you the fetch object, press the clicker and give them a treat

Introducing Corgi puppies

It is important to introduce Corgi puppies to as many things as possible when they are young so that they become conditioned to these things at an early age. You should try to introduce your Corgi puppies to bigger dogs as soon as possible, because corgi’s are not a tall breed and will almost always be the smallest dog in the room. You should also introduce them to loud sounds early, such as a loud t.v or vacuum cleaner.
