If you own a dog, then you are probably aware that they will eat almost anything. The second any food hits the floor, your dog will quickly swoop in and cherish the gift. While most foods are okay for dogs in small portions, there are some foods that can be unhealthy for dogs if they eat too much of it. Today, we are going to discuss whether dogs can eat cheese, and whether you should limit the amount of cheese you give your dog.
Can dogs eat cheese?
Yes, just about all dogs can eat cheese. The only exception are dogs that are lactose intolerant. Dog’s are very attracted to cheese due to its soft texture and strong odor. However, you should stay away from certain types of cheeses that have toxic herbs in them. This includes cheese with garlic or onion, which you should never feed your dog.
Is cheese healthy for dogs?
While dogs can eat cheese, it is not very healthy for them. This is because cheese is very high in calories and fat. A 1.5 ounce serving of cheese (3-4 cubes) usually contains around 100-130 calories and anywhere from 5 to 10 grams of fat.
How much cheese can a dog eat?
A dog can eat around 1 ounce of cheese before it starts to be unhealthy for them. This is because the high concentration of calories and fat in cheese can easily cause your dog to become overweight if fed regularly to your dog. If you want to give your dog cheese as a treat, we recommend feeding him/her low fat cheese. This includes swiss, cottage, and provolone cheese, which all tend to have less than 100 calories and 5 grams of fat per 1 ounce serving. If you have a smaller dog (30 pounds or less), we recommend only feeding him/her ¾ ounce of cheese at a time.
